The Captain’s Gig is long and narrow at 20 foot long and less than 6 feet wide. Historically this boat would have been the personal boat of the ship’s captain. Built with great care and elegantly detailed this boat would be a status symbol for the captain. It is designed to row well across a harbour and the boat would also carry a sail rig to cover distance when needed.
The boat has been designed by legendary boat designer Paul Gartside through the development of this project. The dimensions are based on research carried out by staff and volunteers of the Clyde Maritime Trust over the last few years. From this basis the designer has drawn on traditional styles and shapes of the period to produce this design. It is recognisable in its style and tradition.
